Counseling Toward Solutions:
Building on Competencies in Students, Parents and Colleagues
This workshop will take the participant through the constructs of the solution focused approach, illustrating with each one, how they apply to every day academic and behavioral occurrences in schools, from K-12. The illustrations will include a multitude of case studies, exercises and video clips that demonstrate the model. Each item presented will illustrate how the solution focused approach increases self efficacy, responsibility for change and empowerment in students, parents and teachers, so that cooperation and motivation is increased.
In addition to the application of the constructs, additional information and strategies will be provided on using the solution focused approach with the following situations:
A handout will be provided that will allow the participant to take the information learned over the two days and implement it immediately upon return to campus.
This workshop will also incorporate many facets of narrative therapy, a postmodern therapy that blends with the solution focused approach to create a rich dialogue with students and educators. This blend is especially helpful with students trying to rebuild reputations or create new ways of envisioning their future, particularly after trauma.
